Ekadashi Fasting

Ekadashi MealEkadashi Meal

Twice a month—on the eleventh day of the waning and the eleventh day of the waxing moon—Lord Krishna gives us special opportunities to purify our consciousness and get closer to Him through our diet. This day is called Ekadashi. Fruits, vegetables, salads and soups, along with some food staples are all welcomed on Ekadashi. However many of our loved foods are recommended to be left out of our meals for that day.

Some people fast from all food and water for the entire day, others choose to fast untill noon before following the Ekadashi diet. Still others like to follow just the basics for observing the Ekadashi fasting day—abstaining from all grains and beans like rice, pasta, dhal, beans, lentils, corn, flour and a few other items.

For some, living a life of austerity is considered to be a life well lived. One way to do this is by following these dietary disciplines twice a month. However, common sense must always rule, and Ekadashi is therefore not recommended for those who are weak or in special circumstances such as pregnancy, etc.
