Festivals are a natural vehicle for expressing our devotion for Krishna.

Festivals are important, transcendental opportunities for each of us, because they provide the chance to hear about, chant about, and remember Krishna and His expansions. They are also a great opportunity to associate with devotees. Festivals can be small and intimate or large and opulent, with many people. Janmashtami, the festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, is one of the biggest religious festivals in the world.

On certain holy days, such as Janmashtami, the great teachers of our tradition have recommended we fast from food as an aid to fix our mind and thoughts on Krishna. Fasting may help you remember the spiritual nature of the day. Fasting is often followed by feasting, so here at Krishna.com Food Channel we have collected some festival menus to help you join in the celebration.

In the Hare Krishna movement there is an annual calendar filled with holy days celebrated with much chanting of the holy names as well as other practices to suit the occasion. At these festivals there are almost always special talks and plays highlighting the purpose of the day, as well as grand feasts for Krishna, His devotees, and their friends.

The observance of festivals and holy days has been called “the mother of devotion” because it gives rise to thoughts and actions that lead us to serve Krishna for His pleasure. Our year is filled with festivals honoring the appearance and passing of saints and avatars. As Krishna's devotees, we invite everyone to join in and experience the bliss and joy of these celebrations.
